In too many (three that I can recall) later chapters, the audio cuts off the character's last few words. It was off-putting and, at times, made me lurch for the volume control. In early chapters, the voices were clearly added later - the volume, tone, and intonation were not in sync with the storyline. Regrettably, it is an exception when it comes to production values. Through Elena's captivating voice, we learn not only the personal story of Russia in the second half of the twentieth century, but also the story of one rebellious citizen whose love of a foreign language finally transports her to a new world. She recounts stories passed down to her about the horrors of the Bolshevik Revolution and probes the daily deprivations and small joys of her family's bunkerlike existence. The book is a memoir of the authors early life in Saint Petersburg (then Leningrad) before she moved to the US in the 1970s. In this deeply affecting memoir, Elena re-creates the world that both oppressed and inspired her. Vaelin is still among them, but he’s done most of his growing in the first book so his viewpoints are more boring – his role is now just being the wise mentor figure and/or fearsome enemy to everyone else in the story. The next two books, Tower Lord and Queen of Fire are a total change of pace, the story shifts to being about the events happening across the entire world and we get a bunch of new viewpoint characters. The plot is fine but it is dwarfed by the great characterization and emotional arc. Vaelin is a terrific protagonist, he’s a natural leader but works hard for what he gets, he never seems like a Mary Sue character despite the accolades he receives. I have a bias towards fantasy books about school/training/coming of age and this is a great example of that sub-genre, similar to Red Sister by Mark Lawrence. The first book, Blood Song, follows Vaelin Al Sorna from his initiation into the religious/militaristic Sixth Order at the age of ten through his meteoric rise to become the most famous (or infamous, depending on who you’re talking to) warrior in the known world. After reading The Waking Fire (the first book of his new series), I wanted more so I decided to finally make the plunge. I’ve been meaning to read Anthony Ryan’s Raven’s Shadow series for a long time but kept putting it off because so many people said the second and third books didn’t live up to the promise of the first one. It touches on colonialism and oppression, exploitation and subjugation, naive youthful fervor and cynical calculated greed. It’s not a place to see through any kind of rosy shades. We can’t rely on the threat of force unless they know we will follow up on it.” “We can’t bring perfection to the world without the threat of force. The city of Ilmar may be not as strange and beautifully ugly as Miéville’s New Crobuzon, but it’s decidedly unpleasant in a oddly fascinating way. There’s magic - it’s fantasy after all - but really it’s more of a veneer for the social divisions and bureaucratic oppression musings, and the city and tone at times reminded me of China Miéville minus the overuse of thesaurus. It’s odd and weird and a bit warped, and full of strange and often unlikable characters inhabiting a strange and decidedly unpleasant city that is teetering on the verge of major unrest, waiting for a tiny spark - a McGuffin, really - to set off a chain of disasters. It took me a little while to wrap my head and heart around the happenings in this one. For some reason it often takes me much longer to love Adrian Tchaikovsky’s fantasy offerings even though I tend to have love-at-first-sight affairs with his science fiction.
